Autumn is that wonderful in-between season — the last of the warm days, the first of the cosy jumpers, and a perfect time to show your garden some TLC before winter arrives. A little effort now saves a heap of work come spring!
1. Clear up leaves and debris. Keep paths and lawns tidy to prevent rot and slippery surfaces. A good leaf rake or blower makes the job easier — and the compost heap will thank you later.
2. Tidy your flower beds. Trim back tired plants, remove weeds, and add a layer of mulch to protect roots from frost.
3. Look after your lawn. Give it one last mow (on a higher setting) and sprinkle some autumn lawn feed to strengthen the grass.
4. Plant spring bulbs. Tulips, daffodils and crocuses love being tucked into cool soil now.
5. Protect delicate plants. Wrap pots with fleece or bubble wrap and move tender ones into shelter if possible.
6. Clean and store your tools. A quick wash, dry and oiling keeps them rust-free over winter.
7. Don’t forget your furniture. Clean and cover benches and tables for next year.
