How to Save Water in Your Garden This Summer

How to Save Water in Your Garden This Summer

Simple, effective tips for a lush garden without wasting a drop.

Summer sun is wonderful but it can quickly leave your garden thirsty and your water bill sky-high. The good news? A few smart habits can keep your plants happy while cutting your water use dramatically. Whether you have a sprawling vegetable patch or a few pots on a balcony, water is precious in summer. With rising temperatures and hosepipe bans becoming more common across the UK, gardening wisely has never mattered more. Here are four ways to make every drop count.

1.Water Early: Before 8am keeps evaporation low and roots hydrated for the full day ahead.

2.Collect Rainwater: A water butt attached to your drainpipe can hold up to 200 litres  completely free.

3.Mulch Your Beds: A 5–8cm layer of mulch keeps moisture in the soil for days longer.

4.Water the Roots: Aim at the base of plants, not the leaves. A slow soak beats a quick splash.

Don’t Forget Your Lawn
Lawns are incredibly resilient  even a yellowed summer lawn almost always bounces back once autumn rains arrive. Resist the urge to water it daily. If you do water, let it go deep once a week rather than a daily shallow sprinkle, which encourages shallow roots. Raise your mower height in summer; longer grass shades the soil and stays greener for longer.
