No matter how big or small your garden is, there’s always room to invite nature in. Here are five simple ways to make your outdoor space more wildlife-friendly:
- Build a Bee Hotel
Support solitary bees by installing a bee hotel on a sunny wall. It’s easy to make—just pack hollow sticks into a small cardboard box, or drill holes of various sizes into a block of untreated wood. - Welcome Beetles
This one’s often forgotten, but beetles are brilliant for your garden! Bury one or two logs halfway into the soil. Over time, the buried wood will break down and become a perfect habitat for beetles, especially for their larvae which live underground. - Create a Mini Water Habitat
No space for a pond? Use a pot without drainage holes and fill it with water. Add sticks and leaves that stick out above the surface—hoverflies love this! For extra support, place the pot on top of leaf litter, so larvae have somewhere to go when they emerge. - Offer Nesting Materials
Help birds build their nests by leaving out natural materials like dry leaves, moss, and small twigs. It’s a simple way to give them a hand during nesting season. - Grow Native Plants and Let Some Weeds Be
Plant more native species such as common harebell to support local pollinators. And don’t worry about the odd weed—plants like chickweed can be valuable food and shelter for many creatures.
