Come on Spring Come on Summer.
More so in ancient times certain plants are grown together to support and enhance each other’s growth and, in some instances, keep the pests at bay. In our world where we need less pesticides and more natural ways to grow and protect our fruit and veg, planting teams of buddies is a good start.
Here are just a few of these special teams
Marigolds are the ultimate buddy for many vegetables. Their blooms repel harmful insects like aphids and harmful nematodes while adding a pop of color to the garden e.g. Marigolds and Courgettes. Courgettes may find it hard to attract bees and other pollinators and this is where the marigolds step in and help.
Basil and tomatoes form a dynamic duo: basil not only enhances the flavour of tomatoes but also fends off flies and mosquitoes.
Carrots and onions: Carrots attract pests that onions repel, while onions repel pests that might harm carrots
Then there is the three sisters Corn, beans, and squash: Beans enrich the soil with nitrogen, corn provides a structure for beans to climb, and squash spreads out to prevent weeds.
Cabbage and mint or sage: The strong scented foliage of sage and mint deters numerous pets and in particular the flea beetle.
